Questions From Our Audience
Q: Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been a slow learner. It seems like everyone around me just “gets” the learning way faster than I can. Is there anything I can do about this?
A: Thank you so much for your question. This is one of the reasons why we have started this podcast. Yes, there is a lot that can be done about this. Our view is that the human brain is amazing and capable of so much. It’s better than the best and fastest super-computer that we have. The problem is, a lot of us got poor software to go in that computer / brain. The software can be updated, fixed, and changed. What we are trying to do here through the podcasts is show you how you can update and correct some of this software. We have seen this really work for people. We have some people go from failing out of school to being easy straight ‘A’ students. We have seen people go from studying hours a day to taking an hour of study to ace their classes. There is a lot that can be done. We hope you will make use of our podcasts and that you exploit the ideas we put forward here in ways that are really helpful for you. We look forward to seeing you here often.
Q: In order to learn something, I have to really understand it. But so much of school seems to require quick memorization, but it’s hard to memorize if I can’t really understand… How do I deal with this?
A: We so appreciate your question and concern. There are two different ways to think about this. In various podcasts, we are outlining techniques and approaches that will help you or anyone memorize material, even if you don’t understand it. Now, we are very much with you. We believe that understanding is more important than memorizing, but we know schools often lean on just remembering facts and data. It’s unfortunate that it’s done that way, but we are including podcasts that help to address this. Look out for those. The other side of this is that we are including numbers of approaches that will help you quickly and powerfully arrive at a deeper understanding of the material you’re learning. By doing that, by being able to easily understand through updating the software in your brain, and that understanding will increase and enhance your ability to remember what you need to. This is the best way to learn anything.
Q: Are some people naturally smarter than others?
A: On the surface, it might seem so. At Learn to Learn, we believe that anybody can become quite good at learning. Everybody’s brain and their fundamental capacity is amazing. Of course, there are some people who have brain damage and that sort of thing, but that’s a different thing. There may be things that can be done to help them, but that’s a different category. For the rest of us, our capacity to become much smarter, much more capable of learning, is tremendous. Let me share a quick story. There was an experiment done at one point in a high school where they took the football team, where many of the members were considered to be “dumb jocks.” They could go out on the field and learn a play so much quicker than most of us, so they clearly had intelligence. They taught them how to learn in a different way, so they not only could learn through their bodies, but they could learn visually and auditorily. No one had ever showed them that. Over the several months that they worked with them to develop these skills, those same guys went from the bottom of the class to the very top of the class. Through the course of our podcasts, we explore many ways to increase our learning capacity. In one podcast, we will even explore tested methods for increasing IQ. Thanks for your question. It’s very important to understand what’s possible.
Q: Is everyone capable of becoming super intelligent, or do you think there’s a limit on certain people?
A: Thank you so much for your question. It is our belief and experience that anyone can become much more capable of learning and increase intelligence. It requires “how-to.” What do I need to do to increase my capacity to learn? Or as we say, to increase my ability to update the software that is working in my very good brain. It requires knowing how to do this, persistence, and applying these methods. I don’t know if we know what the limits are, but they are certainly much greater than what we have limited ourselves to.
Q: I’m having a hard time changing my belief when everything I know says that the old belief is true. I would feel like I’m making up stuff if I were to change it.
A: This is a very good question. Thank you for asking. Certainly, through the course of our life we have tried to make sense of what has happened to us. In the midst of emotional or social duress, we have tried to understand what it means about us and our life. We have oftentimes come to the wrong conclusion, just because we were under duress. Once we’ve come to that conclusion, any other evidence is pushed aside and seems incorrect. If we took someday who believed that the earth is flat, no matter what data we showed them, they would think “It can’t be” “Here’s the reason” “I can’t accept that.” This is the very nature of our belief system. It tries to find what’s true and then holds tightly to it. It disputes anything else. We sometimes feel like we are making stuff up. Once we follow the approaches that we have talked about here and that you can find in other places, we can change those beliefs, the filters, the lens that we see through. The new beliefs that we are looking through let us see things that, in the past, we couldn’t even imagine being possible. Our whole perspective then changes. What we used to believe can now seem to be the version that we made up. The new, updated beliefs are much more supportive and tend to generate more evidence to support the updated belief. If we believe that we are stupid, we tend to do badly on things and say, “See, I knew it!” But if we can change that belief so we can start to have a new experience, we can find that are smart and capable. We hope this answers your question.
